On 24 November 2015 Eurecna supported the National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) in the organization of the conference “Role of Education in combating gender-based violence”, in the framework of the EU-funded project “Gender Equity and Empowerment of Lebanese Women in Lebanon”.
The conference has been organized on the eve of the “16 days of activism against gender-based violence campaign”, launched by the UN, starting on 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ending on 10 December 2015, Human Rights Day.
The conference saw high level attendance with the participation of Mr. Alexis Loeber, Head of the Cooperation Section at the EU Delegation to Lebanon, Ms. Vera Zaytouni, Head of Mount Lebanon Educational Region, representing the Ministry of Education and Mr. Fady Karam, Secretary General of NCLW. Representatives of Governmental General Directorates, civil society organisations, universities and media also took part in the event.
The need to support education as a tool to empower women has been stressed during the event; Mr. Karam underlined that “we can’t reach a complete and sustainable community development without eliminating gender based violence, especially that effecting women. Education has an essential role in combating this violence”. Mr. Karam highlighted NCLW's achievements on the legislative level and mentioned the “National Strategy for Women in Lebanon” which was launched by NCLW, in addition to the "Gender focal point network" that spans across all governmental administrations.
