In March 2019, Eurecna finalised the study “International Experience of Support for Innovation and Smart Specialisation: Australia, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, and Turkey”.
The study was commissioned by Smart Specialisation Hub UK. It provided an international comparison between the UK and five OECD countries outside the EU (Australia, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, and Turkey), focusing on their approach to regional innovation and smart specialisation.
The analysed countries are diverse in size, governance, degree of decentralisation, as well as approaches to public investment and regional innovation. A wide variety of approaches have therefore been presented, both at the national and regional levels. These could form examples for a future UK-wide or local innovation policy, but also give an idea of what forms of cooperation could take place both nationally and regionally.
